For the second year in a row, a water district softball team brought home the championship trophy from the Bay Area Utilities Softball Tournament.
The real winner this year, though, was the Make-A-Wish Foundation - the beneficiary of the 2009 charity event held this August at the Twin Creeks Softball Complex. This year the two water district teams and their supporters were instrumental in raising $3,400 for the foundation.
Not only did the district field the winning team, but a crew of district cooks handled the barbecue that fed all six teams and their families.
Coached to victory in the double-elimination tournament by John Cordova, event organizer and water district employee, the district’s Team A won the championship over our Team B and teams from North Coast County Water District, City and County of San Francisco, West Valley Construction and San Jose Water Company.
To spread the good will, Cordova plans to donate the funds raised each year to a different charity. While this year it was the Make-A-Wish Foundation, last year the funds were donated to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. Next year he plans on donating the funds to a diabetes charity.
